Our Sites, Our Kuleana

The sites of Waipiʻo Valley that we steward are our deepest kuleana (responsibility). Starting from the Nāpoʻopoʻo village site & Apua (Ti House) in Waipiʻo Valley from the roots of our programs now to other sites, including Koaʻekea (Waipiʻo Valley Lookout PONC) and Mahiki & Lalakea (Waipiʻo Valley rimlands).

Each of these ʻāina (lands) holds special significance to Hawaiian culture & Waipiʻo Valley, with specific and intertwined moʻolelo (stories and history). We are honored to steward these ʻāina, and take that kuleana seriously. The programs that we offer on the sites are aimed to be regenerative to the land and revitalizing to the culture and community.

Nāpoʻopoʻo
Ancient Village Site in Waipiʻo Valley

The largest ancient village in Waipiʻo Valley, Nāpoʻopoʻo is located below the famous Hiʻilawe Waterfall and still lined with the kuʻauna (rock walls surrounding taro patches) that have been dated back to being built between 800 -1200 AD. There are over 400 taro patches in the area and 43 platforms where homes once stood.

Apua
Ti House

The Apua area is the forested hillside above the Hiʻilawe river south of the Nāpoʻopoʻo village site. In the area is the Ti House, a famous structure in Waipiʻo Valley that is known as a symbol of failed development and for itʻs magnficent views of Hiʻilawe waterfall and the Waipiʻo beach from the same place. Now dedicated as an educational site, Pōhāhā I Ka Lani stewards it the perpetuation of the culture.

Koaʻekea
Waipiʻo Lookout PONC

Koaʻekea is the area at the Waipiʻo Valley Lookout, imbued with historical & cultural significance.   The land we steward is a County of Hawaiʻi Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission (PONC) parcel, which stands above the descent into Waipiʻo Valley with a magnificent view of Waipiʻo Valley below. Pōhāhā I Ka Lani hosts groups, classes, and workshops at the site for land stewardship and cultural education.

Mahiki & Lalakea
Waipiʻo Valley Rimlands

The lands above Waipiʻo Valley on the eastern side, known commonly as the rimlands and culturally as the lands of Mahiki and Lalakea, are a large culturally and ecologically significant area. Primarily covered in a failed plantation of Eucalyptus grandis trees, the land holds multiple culturally significant sites, and is thought of as the home of the Gods. Remnants of the beautiul ʻōhiʻa trees that once lined the top of the cliffs are threatened by Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death and trespassers.
